Rock Steady

The other night, my cousin went to a salsa club for her birthday. It was my first time dancing salsa... can't wait to try it again!

Sumasayaw

Sumasayaw is the Tagalog word for Dancer. So here we have a picture of my cousin's friend, faux-tatted up with the Baybayin characters for Sumasayaw, being accompanied by her witty-footed friend. It was fun to watch!

Cecilia

Cecilia

A Baybayin canvas piece for my cousin, Cecilia. Ever since I started "painting", she always suggested that I should be doing canvas pieces. Actually, she was the first person to request a canvas piece from me! And finally, a year later of doing canvases, stickers, hats, cards, tattoo designs, etc... I finally make her a canvas piece. :-D

Better late than never, right?

Her name in red, her last name on the bottom in gold-red. Acrylic, oil paints, aerosol, and deco paint markers on canvas.

Biters will get their teeth cracked, so fall back!

Focusing

On my way to design a "Bahala Na" tatt for Ms. Evey, I was looking through a few of my books for inspiration; Usugrow's art book, The Calligrapher's Bible, Tssst: Pixacao, Graffiti World...

Finally, I stumbled upon a book I haven't taken a look at in a good while: Word into Art, Artists of the Modern Middle East (By Venetia Porter).  If any of you are into modern calligraphy, specifically Arabic Calligraphy, then this is a MUST pick up!  One thing that really separates the Arabic writing system from others is how much the letters connect and flow.  The simplicity of the stroke design, in effect, births the complexity of its overall aesthetic.

So, after a few trials, I came out with 6 flowing-scripts for "Bahala Na"

She's looking for a piece to flow down the side of her rib cage/back/side torso.  I think this flows much more than my individual character piece, but I'll give it up for the other one too because the individual charater piece is dope in that superimposed upon the Bahala Na characters are also the charaters for her name...

Anyways, I hope she enjoys the designs, and to the rest that have inquired about tatt pieces, this is just a glimpse of the work process.

Quality over quanity, FREEHAND over FONTS.

Proper Afterthoughts

First and foremost, shoutout and thanks to SCPASA, UCR Katipunan, and everyone who came to the conference. Specifically, everyone who came to my workshop! I got a lot of good feedback, and overheard good things about what people thought about my workshop. I figured, if I treated the presentation half like a spoken word performance, and half like a professional presentation, I could captivate the young crowd. It was a pretty good formula.

Secondly, for those that attended my workshop, I understand that the character sheets that were handed out were improperly printed. So, here's a copy of the proper character sets:

Third, here are some useful and informative links regarding Baybayin:
Eagles Corner Online Baybayin Translator - Just type and translate! BE SURE to first translate into Tagalog syllables first!
A Philippine Leaf - Hector Santos, one of the first to ever post articles online about Baybayin. TONS of information and history on the script.
Pinoy Tattoos.com - I like looking at the photos of other people's Baybayin tatts.
BAHALA Meditations - If you recall the entire bit about Bahala, and the characters take it to different meanings, this is the article that I was referring to. Very good read, it goes deeper into Bahala and the relation to spirituality.

Fourth and finally... pictures from the event. :-D

On my way to the conference, fixin my tie, tryna stay fresh and crispy:

After my workshop, I headed back to my table to answer questions and take personal requests for writing personal Baybayin name cards. I was surprised how many people lined up at the table! It was great to see so many take interest in Baybayin, and to get so much positive feedback from the workshop attendees themselves.

A great night, I had a blast... met up with some of the workshop attendees, and spit some game. And at the end of the night, when my cousin and I got back to my car, Karma decided to rear it's head and bring me back to Earth:

Really though, I was still on my feel-good high, so I could've cared less. And it's all thanks to the people that made it such a fun ride... though the ride home was rather cold!

Ah yes, and out of all the pictures I took (much more will be posted on my Facebook), only two came out that I found appealing for my Faux-Club-Photographer series. Enjoy:
